While in high school I was awarded a scholarship to art college which I commuted to on the weekends. My love of business led me into a more traditional career, and I stopped painting for a while. Then one day, I learned that one of my clients was really into painting and was working with an artist who was mentoring her. She introduced us and started mentoring me too, and I was her last student before she succumbed to macular degeneration, losing her sight. She trained me in her studio in Laguna Beach, where I learned the exact opposite style of painting that I was accustomed to, which meant we duplicated photos and worked with paintbrushes the size of one pixel. For over 6-months I drove to her studio every weekend and we painted peoples' faces. She also spent hours teaching me how she mixed paint, and how to really "see." From this point on I started blending abstract with more realistic elements. I now felt a greater range in my ability to create. My love of painting was reignited.
